Homework Support is given daily and homework reports are sent home to parents.
Students have the opportunity to explore themed units on an independent basis through hands-on center, or “Zone” activities and outdoor fun. “Zone” activities are created for independent exploration. During these zone activities, teachers are encouraging children as they explore and guiding children to promote their development cognitively and social emotionally.
3-Minute Meeting: A sense of community is built as teachers and students gather for a brief meeting, once arriving at school each day. News of the day is shared, in addition to character building through discussion of a weekly Value Word.
Character Connection: Character education is integrated daily into our activities. From themes relating to self-esteem, families, the environment and taking care of our Kids R Kids community to discussion of a weekly Value Word, children are instilled with opportunities to attain positive character traits. One of the many afterschool clubs was designed to highlight respect, citizenship, cooperation, gratitude, and other values as students choose to participate in a variety of service projects.
“In The Zone”: Our zone activities allow opportunities to develop academic, creative and social emotional growth. Children are encouraged to learn through exploration and play. Here are the zones and the skills they develop:
- Character Development: Different value words are discussed and posted in the classroom weekly, to instill positive character traits in our children. Students are praised as they are “caught being good” demonstrating a positive use of value words.
- Music: In a zone packed with musical listening stations, a variety of instruments, and sheet music. Students’ creativity is fostered as they create original compositions, and rhythm is taught when students explore music through listening and dancing.
- Journals: School age children gain confidence in many aspects of writing through journaling. These include phonetic and traditional spelling, developing their writer’s voice, and improving writing conventions.
- Art: Teachers foster each student’s uniqueness, as students are prompted to create art using their own interpretation. Fine motor skills are refined as students learn to operate art tools with precision. Projects involve a large variety of materials, increasing our students’ sensory development.
- Construction: Fine and large motor skills are employed by students as they work to improve body movement control. This zone also allows for development of oral language skills and team-building as students work together.
- Drama: As students act out roles, they hone skills of communication, relating to others, and working together to solve problems. Creativity and a passion for learning is contagious here.
- Games: Numerous social skills are cultivated as students learn the art of turn-taking, sportsmanship, and oral language communication while playing games. Fine motor skills and increased eye-hand coordination are nurtured as students pay attention to detail.
- Technology: As the scientific method is utilized, students’ intellectual development will grow, in addition to their problem solving skills. Critical thinking and fine motor skills advance with the fine attention to detail technology demands of our students.
- Reading and Research: Reading is a key indicator of future academic success for children. As students cozy up with a book, their vocabulary amplifies. When our children research an interesting topic, intellectual development escalates as they learn to judge and select relevant information.
Afterschool Clubs: Students may choose to participate in a number of clubs, individualized to meet the interest of each student. Our Kids R Kids exclusive clubs stimulate children’s intellectual development, as they gain a broader knowledge of cooking, gardening, writing, technology and other topics. Social emotional skills enlarge as students learn essential team building techniques. Cultural appreciation shines in every club as our students work on projects designed to learn about the world around us. Some of these clubs include:
-
Green Thumb Club - Dig out your shovel as we learn about planning, growing and maintaining a garden, growing plants, and a variety of other horticulture projects.
