Implementation of New Curriculum, August 24, 2009.

Dear Parents, We truly value you.  You are the integral part of the parent and teacher connection.  This mutual relationship offers a strong educational foundation and optimal care for your child.  We absolutely want to provide your child with the best learning experiences and share information with you to bridge the gap between home and school.  School days are just around the corner.  We will begin our new curriculum on August 24.

Premier Preschool: We think you will be extremely pleased at all the opportunities your child will have as they grow in so many ways.  As you may have heard us say before, children learn best through play and the ability to explore at their own pace.  Therefore our new curriculum provides an abundance of hands on learning activities, as well as academic small group instruction, accompanied by all the every day fun!  When children are encouraged to delve into a topic in a variety of ways, the learning process is individualized.

Your child will be given experiences that meet their individual needs and stimulate learning in all developmental areas including language, cognitive, physical, aesthetic, and social-emotional.  We will share more about out Premier Preschool during a curriculum event in the fall.

Family Connection: One item that is new for you will be the “Family Connection” portion of the curriculum.  You will be asked to engage your child at home each week with an activity that relates to our learning goals for the specific week.  You can use that information to inquire about your child’s day and create discussions on your way home from school.   You may also want to send in various items that relate to the theme, to enhance the learning and the fun! Overall, you will see our curriculum challenging each child to excel.

It will not always look like paper and pencil activities.  To make learning more concrete and relative to your child’s word, you will see the use of manipulative.  These objects may look like “just a toy.” Actually these toys serve a purpose in your child’s learning.  They will explore the manipulative and begin to count, sort, add, and create patterns with their teacher’s guidance, just to name a few learning goals.  Some activities like puzzles and stringing beads help children master fine motor development and finger dexterity which leads to writing abilities.  These same skill sets could not be achieved as successfully if only paper and pencil activities were used.

There is tremendous value in a child holding a pencil and completing a paper based activity, such as journaling.  Although, a preschooler who writes his letters in a try of salt or forms a letter out of play-doh benefits from the tactile experience and is more likely to recall the information by using more of his senses.  It will require an open mind and communication from family to school to understand the value in our instructional strategies.

Please take time to visit with your child’s Lead Teacher if you have any questions about our curriculum and activities in the classroom.

Our Director of Education can also provide insight as we begin a new school year. The new Kids R Kids curriculum is research based and reflective of best practices to facilitate achievement for all children.
